This is a fairly simple invention. Sometimes there’s beauty in simplicity. While our beloved Britax car seats all have removable, washable covers, it is a pain to take them off wash them, wait for them to line dry and reassemble. So I try to avoid carseat messes at all cost. We frequently travel about 140 miles to see Nana and Papa. Normally Big Picky easily goes 3 hours between diapers. I don’t know if its because she’s sitting on the diaper pressing peepee out, if she’s hitting the sippy cup too frequently out of boredom or if she just likes to peepee in the car, but she started soaking thru every time. For those of you passing judgement on my mothering skills, recommending that I stop and change her more often, I tried that. Inevitably, when I’d stopped midway she’d be perfectly dry. I’d stop again - dry as a desert. Then when we’d arrive she’d be sopping wet and there’d be a pool in the seat. It just seems ridiculous to stop every half hour and she really doesn’t seem to mind. So I searched around ’til I found the Kiddopotamus PiddlePad.
The Basics
The Piddlepad is a waterproof, reusable carseat liner that costs approximately $9.99
The Raves
Functional: I have to admit that the first impression wasn’t good. This thing looks flimsy and pretty useless, but since I was desperate for a solution and too lazy to return it, I figured I’d give it a shot. It looked like it would slide around and have to be readjusted every time I’d put Big Picky in her seat. It didn’t look like it would absorb enough to protect the seat. I pleased to admit that I was wrong. I’m a convert. This is great! It didn’t solve the wet pants problem, but those easy to change compared to the car seat cover. The waterproof pad has a grippy backing, preventing it from slipping. It stays in place well; I rarely need to adjust it. Since it just lies in place, it’s easy to pull it out and pop it in the washer. Or to move it from car to car.
The Rants
Appearance: The Piddle pad only comes in black or navy. The black looks okay on my gray Britax, but looks somewhat junky on our tan Britax.
Other
I just found a Deluxe PiddlePad. It’s thicker, claiming it can absorb a whole cup of water. It’s also looks more molded to the seat shape, which could be good or bad, depending on how universal the shape is. I’m interested to hear if any of you have tried the deluxe. When I move Little Picky to her convertible seat I’ll need to get another PiddlePad. I’ll probably try the deluxe. I’ll let you know what I think.
The Verdict
This is great on long car rides and I can see it being equally helpful during potty training. I just wished it looked nicer.
