When I was pregnant with Big Picky, I decided we’d cloth diaper.  I wouldn’t describe myself as “crunchy” but I do tend toward the natural.  I’m not a die hard baby-wearing, breast-feeding, natural mama… but I do like my Baby Hawk, just celebrated 6 months breast-feeding and only have organic baby food in my pantry… on the shelf above the Doritos.  I figured I give cloth diapers a try and see how they fit into my delicate balance of natural vs. convenient.  After much research, I decided that I would like pocket diapers the best - once the absorbent inserts were stuffed into the waterproof pockets, it was just like using disposables.  No folding, no pins.  I tried a few different types of pocket diapers.  We liked cloth diapering.  It wasn’t much more work than disposables and we didn’t have heaps of disposable in our trash.  One of our favorites is the BumGenius! 3.0 One Sized Diaper.

The Basics
The BumGenius 3.0 is the latest version of the BumGenius line of one-size pocket-style reusable cloth diapers.

The Raves
Colors:  BumGenius offers a variety of fresh, vibrant colors.
Adjustment: This diaper claims to fit babies from newborn through potty training.  While I disagree that this diaper will fit the entire range, it does fit for a long time.  I found that it was too bulky until about 2 months.  I liked having this diaper in my stash for my daughter.  I reallylike having it in my stash for my two daughters.  It’s great being able to snap a few snaps and use Big Picky’s diaper for Little Picky when we hit the bottom of the pile.
Absorbency:  The BG 3.0 comes with 2 inserts.  One for a newborn and the other is adjustable for all 3 size snap settings.  The small insert really cuts down on bulk when you don’t need the extra absorbency.  It can also serve as a doubler with the large insert when you need lots of absorbency.  The large insert is sufficiently absorbent.  I use that insert for both Big Picky and Little Picky.

The Rants
Aplix (Similar to Velcro) Fasteners: I know some cloth loving mamas who love aplix.  This is basically the way disposable diapers fasten.  The positive side of aplix is that it’s easy to close and adjust.  The down side is that it tends to wear faster and is easier for toddlers to undo.  The first is mainly cosmetic; the tabs tend to pill.  The second can get messy.  I found that out the hard way.  It’s never a good feeling to hear “ucky! Ucky!  UUUUUUCKY!” broadcasting from the monitor.  After cleaning up the poopy mess, I vowed never to use this as a summer sleeping diaper.  I still use these diapers regularly, but I do make sure it’s coved with pants.

Other
Each revision of the BG OS keeps getting better and better.  The big improvement from 2.0 to 3.0 is in the tabs.  The 2.0’s tended to leak around the tabs, especially if you had a tummy sleeper.  The 3.0’s have improved the tab, eliminating those leaks. I do have concerns about the elastic durability. The leg elastic on two of my 2.0’s recently gave out after 18 months of use. I’ve had no issues with my 3.0’s thus far, though.

The Verdict

Definately give these a try if you’re interested in cloth diapers. These and Fuzzi Bunz Perfect Fit are my most reached-for diapers.
