This is another item I bought at the recommendation of Mrs. Organized. Before Big Picky was born, this sounded like a wonderful idea. Babies are leaky creatures, crib sheets are a pain to change, so this would make my life easier. Since it would make my life easier, I’d buy 2. And then I realized my baby was less leaky than most. She spit up once after eating…ever. It happened to be during the 2006 National Championship game, so I theorize that the Buckeye’s performance just made her sick to her stomach. I wanted to puke too. So these 2 Ultimate Crib Sheets sat in the drawer…and sat…and sat…until we got the flu when Big Picky was just over a year old. We ALL got the flu - the barfy kind. I was about 4 months pregnant, trying to care for a (now) very leaky baby and a barfy husband in between barfing myself. I cannot tell you how I fell in love with these sheets. [click to continue…]

I knew the jump from 1 child to 2 would be a challenge. I knew Big Picky would want attention and the new Lil Picky would miss the constant rocking from her previous home. I also knew I’d want to get some housework done at some point. I concluded that a staff of 3 (nanny, maid and gardener) was slightly out of our budget. I settled on finding a better carrier. A Baby Bjorn freed up my hands to get cleaning done with Big Picky. I knew there was something even better out there. After trying on an assortment of carriers (with Big Picky running around the store and new born Lil Picky giving me the evil eye for being waken with every transfer to a new carrier) I fell in love with the Baby Hawk. I set out on what I thought was an easy mission: find a well made pair of plain brown leather shoes for Big Picky. Easier said than done. There were and abundance of brown shoes with pink flowers or contrasting stitching, but I wanted plain brown. These would be her everyday shoe. I wanted to be able to polish them without avoiding stitching or flowers. I wanted her to wear them with red pants and pink skirts and blue jeans. I almost gave up. Then I found the Janna, by Kid Express

I’m a repeat cloth diaper user. I used cloth on Big Picky and again for Lil Picky. I already had quite a nice stash from Big Picky, so it was hard to justify buying more for Lil Picky. But, as any one who CD’s knows, fluffy mail is addictive. There’s something irresistible about getting that squishy envelope with a new diaper, especially if it’s a fun color or new style. I resisted temptation… until my beloved FuzziBunz announced their One Size
diaper. [click to continue…]

After much research we purchased an Inglesina Zippy for Big Picky. I loved (and still love) that stroller. When Big Picky was 10 months old, we were delighted to find out we were expecting Lil Picky. That news catapulted us into the glamourless world of double strollers. I didn’t want a side by side – just too big to maneuver through stores and crowds. I didn’t want a front and back – just too long to steer. That quickly ruled out most of the options out there, leaving a select handful of jogging-style strollers with double kits. All of those were just too big and heavy… except one. The Phil & Teds Sport Buggy. [click to continue…]

My husband wanted a manly diaper bag for Christmas the year Big Picky was born. My mom was more than happy to have a gift idea for Mr. Picky (who is a tad difficult to shop for.) Surprisingly, there were several good options out there. The Skip*Hop Duo stood out from the crowd with it’s multitude of pockets and nifty convertible strap. The Skip*Hop Duo quickly became our go-to diaper bag. [click to continue…]

Your first love always holds a special place in your heart. That’s the way it is with this stroller. It was a good choice. Given the same information, I’d make the same decision again. I’d recommend a different stroller is if it is highly likely that you’ll have 2 kiddos within 2 years… which we did. Our first took years to conceive and then… WAMMO! The second was quick and easy. We didn’t dream we’d have two riders at once. If you have 2 riding, then any one of the Phil&Ted’s lineup is an easy decision. But, I still do use and love the Zippy. I do not hesitate to recommend it. [click to continue…]

When I bought this I knew nothing about swings. I did know was that I had a 4 week old baby that wouldn’t sleep unless she was in my arms. I knew she needed to sleep because I needed to sleep. I knew that it was 8:35 and if I left right then, I could probabally make it to Babies R’ Us and get a swing before they closed. So I loaded Big Picky in the infant carrier and headed to BRU. I was able to get Mrs. Organized’s advice on the phone on the way there. She had the Fisher-Price Rainforest Swing for her daughter and liked it. In this new mommy desperate for sleep last minute swing run, that was enough for me. F-P it would be. [click to continue…]

When I was pregnant with Big Picky, I decided we’d cloth diaper. I wouldn’t describe myself as “crunchy” but I do tend toward the natural. I’m not a die hard baby-wearing, breast-feeding, natural mama… but I do like my Baby Hawk, just celebrated 6 months breast-feeding and only have organic baby food in my pantry… on the shelf above the Doritos. I figured I give cloth diapers a try and see how they fit into my delicate balance of natural vs. convenient. After much research, I decided that I would like pocket diapers the best - once the absorbent inserts were stuffed into the waterproof pockets, it was just like using disposables. No folding, no pins. I tried a few different types of pocket diapers. We liked cloth diapering. It wasn’t much more work than disposables and we didn’t have heaps of disposable in our trash. One of our favorites is the BumGenius! 3.0 One Sized Diaper. [click to continue…]

This is a fairly simple invention. Sometimes there’s beauty in simplicity. While our beloved Britax car seats all have removable, washable covers, it is a pain to take them off wash them, wait for them to line dry and reassemble. So I try to avoid carseat messes at all cost. We frequently travel about 140 miles to see Nana and Papa. Normally Big Picky easily goes 3 hours between diapers. I don’t know if its because she’s sitting on the diaper pressing peepee out, if she’s hitting the sippy cup too frequently out of boredom or if she just likes to peepee in the car, but she started soaking thru every time. For those of you passing judgement on my mothering skills, recommending that I stop and change her more often, I tried that. Inevitably, when I’d stopped midway she’d be perfectly dry. I’d stop again - dry as a desert. Then when we’d arrive she’d be sopping wet and there’d be a pool in the seat. It just seems ridiculous to stop every half hour and she really doesn’t seem to mind. So I searched around ’til I found the Kiddopotamus PiddlePad. [click to continue…]
